KISUMU NATIONAL POLYTECHNIC MARKS 8TH GRADUATION CEREMONY

The Kisumu National Polytechnic celebrated its eighth-graduation ceremony at a colourful event presided over by the Kenya National Examination Council chairman Prof. George Magoha on Friday March 2, 2018 at the institution’s grounds.

More than 2000 students from 10 departments graduated with Higher National Diplomas, Diplomas and certificates in various technical and business fields. The graduation ceremony is a culmination of years of study under the tutelage of an experienced team of academic staff with the support of the administration of the institution.

“Of the more than 300 institutions I have visited across the world, this polytechnic is as good as the best of them in terms of the equipment, training facilities and resources you have,” said Professor Magoha. The Chief guest criticized the conversion of technical institutions into universities, saying that this could lead to an imbalance in the number of technicians that the economy requires, “Kenya could end up with too many consultants and senior engineers without the necessary technicians to support their work … the craze to have all students study in universities is utter nonsense, it deprives the society of the most needed skills,” he said.

Chief Principal Mrs Joyce Nyanjom hosted the ceremony that was attended by various guests including the director Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Dr Meshack Opwora, the Council Chair Engineer Peter Okaka and council members, County woman representative Rosa Buyu and Kisumu County Education minister Dr John Obiero Ogone who represented Governor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o. The Creative Arts Club, modern dance troupe, choir and other clubs kept the congregation entertained with well-choreographed performances showcasing their talent.

TVET director Dr Meshak Opwora echoed Prof Magoha’s sentiments saying, “TVET is the future of this country and, our focus is to ensure equity, gender considerations and delivery of competency-based curriculum to train and equip our future leaders with skills for self-reliance”. Professor Magoha also lauded the institution for the initiative to establish the Open Distance and Flexible Learning (ODFL) which is focused on delivering competency-based courses that impart skills applicable in industry. He encouraged the graduands to maintain high integrity as they enter the job market.

 

The institution’s success can be attributed to support from various stakeholders including the Ministry of Education, the World Bank, Canadian Institutes and Colleges; local industries and institutions.” TVET programs are expensive to run and I must thank our parents for the financial support and our partners too, their contribution has been immense,” Prof Okaka said.

Mrs Nyanjom congratulated the graduands for their excellence and encouraged them to remain focused, “I am confident that you have been well equipped with skills and are ready for the job market. This success should be celebrated by all those who contributed to it, the parents, guardians and sponsors. The cordial relationship that we have had with our stakeholders and community cannot be underscored. I’m grateful to you all for your support,” she said.

For many graduates the end of the academic journey marks the beginning of an exciting future working in industries equipped with the power to deliver.

TKNP has witnessed tremendous growth in the recent past in infrastructure, with student numbers soaring beyond 5,000; who are pursuing over 50 diploma and 46 certificate courses. The population is supported by a total of 189 trainers, comprising of 139 and 50 TSC and Governing Council recruited staff respectively.

The 10 departments of the polytechnic include Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Maths Computer, Building and Civil Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Applied Sciences, Institutional Management, Liberal Studies, Entrepreneurship and the Business department. The departments deliver courses through conventional classrooms, Open Distance and Flexible Learning (ODFL) and practical sessions.
