KISUMU POLY HOSTS 24TH EDITION OF KETISA GAMES

The Kisumu National Polytechnic recently hosted the 24th annual athletics, rugby and soccer championships organized under the Kenya Technical Institutions Sports Association (KETISA)

The theme for this year’s sports gala was reducing drug abuse and HIV/AIDS through sports. “Sports activities keep students engaged in constructive tasks and keeps them healthy in the mind and body” said Mr. Ongwacho, sports Officer TKNP. The four-day event began on March 28, 2018 and ended on March 31 attracting twenty technical institutions from across the country with all the regions well represented. TKNP posted a good performance despite the prowess from rivals and emerged a repectable position six out of the 20 teams while Eldoret National Polytechnic won the trophy for the best team overall.  Teams excelled in the various categories; Sigalagala National Polytechnic emerged winners in Rugby men, Kitale National Polytechnic won the men’s floorball while Eldoret Poly won the women’s floorball, athletics and Soccer ladies thus becoming the KETISA games 2018 champions.

Some of the institutions represented at the event included the ten national polytechnics led by the Kisumu National Polytechnic, the National Youth Service, the Railways Institute, Kenya Institute of Mass Communication, Kenya Waster institute and others. The women’s soccer and rugby events attracted spectators with the teams that made it to the finals appreciated for a good show of talent and skill “Women soccer is a popular game  and has a chance to attract more skilled players, we need to increase our enrolments to have more people participate in the game as we help our students to hone their skills in sports” said County TVET director Mr Ocharo in his closing remarks.

In her opening address TKNP Chief Principal Joyce Nyanjom welcomed all the participants to the event, “I welcome all the distinguished guests and all the participating teams to this year’s championships and to our beautiful city. When time allows please explore the new opportunities and enjoy,” she said.

The national and local organizing committee delivered on its mandate with TKNP’s environmental team keeping the sports fields clean by constantly clearing litter, “the event taking place today is as a result of a year of preparation, and this is evident in the manner in which the planning and execution has been done. I must appreciate the Principal and host who is also the KETISA chair Madam Joyce for the good job”, said Mr Akach. TVET County director Mr Ocharo, reaffirmed the statement saying “sports is source of livelihood today and a very big industry…our coaches should nurture the talent identified in the students by coaching them well to participate in bigger teams and join professional teams”. Besides fulfilling the official theme, this sports event is an opportunity to tour the region and mingle. We encourage you to tour our region once you finish the games”. Said Mr Ocharo

KETISA Secretary General Mr Ngana congratulated the teams for their efforts while announcing the results. The National technical institutions’ sports festival is an annual event that rotates around technical institutions in all the counties and attracts participants around the whole country. TKNP’s   Joyce Nyanjom who is also the chairperson of the KETISA Governing Council welcomed teams from more than 10 counties to annual sports gala and extended an invitation for the guests to tour the city to appreciate its beauty.
