The Mechanical Engineering department is one of flagship departments at The Kisumu National Polytechnic. It is among the departments that are as old as the institution that started as Technical Secondary School in 1967.
The department has undergone several transformations in its life as a technical training provider. Mechanical engineering department has three major sections; Production option Engineering, Plant option Engineering and Automotive option engineering. The department has improved its training facilities over the years, especially in Mechanical Engineering production and plant options with the state-of-the art equipment. This has enhanced the training to conform to the dynamic technology in most industries around the globe.
The department has witnessed growth in terms of physical facilities, courses as well as in personnel. In terms of personnel, the department has a total of 30 trainers of which seventeen trainers are under the Public Service Commission of Kenya employment and thirteen are employed by the Kisumu National Polytechnic governing council. Besides, the department has five technicians who assist in the training and man the workshops within the department.
The department boasts of well-equipped workshops in which all the practical lessons are conducted, an ICT laboratory from which the students can access the internet and from where subjects such as autoCAD are conducted, a smart classroom from which simulated learning programs are installed, Refrigeration and Air conditioning workshop, well equipped hydraulics and Pneumatics laboratory and an industrial boiler/steam plant among others.
The department is currently offering both TVET and CDACC programs in all its regular courses (full-time courses). The department in partnership With KEFEP (Kenya Education for Employment Program), Curriculum Development and Assessment Certification Council (CDACC), Colleges and Institutes Canada (CiCAN), Industrial Advisory Council (IAC) and other stakeholders developed occupational standards and curriculum in plant operations and maintenance for levels four to Six. This program was approved by CDACC and launched on the 15th February, 2021 and is currently being implemented.
Therefore, the experience as a trainee in the mechanical Engineering department will equip you with the relevant knowledge and competencies and impact your career positively.
MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF DEPARTMENT
Mr. ELLY ODHIAMBO AWUOR
Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The Kisumu National Polytechnic.
The department runs TIVET diploma and certificate courses in Mechanical Engineering – Production option and Automotive Engineering and Diploma courses in Mechanical Engineering – Construction Plant and Mechanical Engineering – Plant options. We also run CBET/CDACC programs in Industrial Plant Operations at levels four and five, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning from levels four to six and Automotive technician level 6. The department also runs a fully-fledged driving school.
The vision of the department is to excel in skill-based engineering.
The department has well qualified and dedicated staff and strive to impart knowledge, skills and attitudes to trainees in latest technologies. The objective is to prepare trainees for successful careers in industry, research and academics to meet the needs of growing technology. We endeavour to develop the ability of among trainees to apply knowledge and skills gained to solve engineering problems in society.
The department provides trainees with opportunity to work in teams or as leaders in various disciplines.
The department recently won an award at the innovation and skills competition organized by EASTRIP at the Kisumu National Polytechnic on gasifier stove which uses pellets made from agricultural waste (ie. Sugar cane waste – Bargasse).
